Trustees of the Freedom Forum and the Freedom Forum Diversity Institute held three days of meetings at the Overby Center for Southern Journalism and Politics both to conduct business and congratulate Overby Center namesake Charles Overby upon his retirement.
Events include one panel discussion by the founders of USA TODAY, the nation’s first national newspaper, on the concept and experience, and one by Freedom Forum staff on the global reach of the Forum created to promote and preserve free expression.
Overby, a Pulitzer-winning journalist and Jackson, Miss., native, has been CEO of the Forum since it was founded 20 years ago and has been chairman for 11 years.
Formerly the Gannett Foundation, the Freedom Forum is the parent of the Overby Center and other centers of free expression in the United States including the Newseum on Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C. Overseas operations include Zurich, Johannesburg, Buenos Aires and Hong Kong.
Dr. Will Norton Jr., dean of the Meek School of Journalism and New Media at Ole Miss, has been a trustee of the Freedom Forum for 12 years. Former Ole Miss Chancellor Robert Khayat is a trustee of the Diversity Institute.
